The story that the world has been told of the events leading up to the collapse of the Grenada Revolution is quite simple. The hard-liners of the New Jewel Movement, led by Bernard Coard took action to seize power from the moderate and reasonable Maurice Bishop, leading to the latters execution. The real story is different from that of  the United States inspired narrative.

This March 8th marks 110 years since the first celebration of  International Women’s Day, February 28 1909.
How many actions, how many sacrifices, have women of all ages, and skin colours, undertaken during these 110 years!
In Grenada, during our Revolution of 1979-1983, young women did not flee from the sexual abuse of employers. Instead the employers were made to stop! Women were proud to take up non-traditional jobs on buses, fishing boats and heavy construction equipment. The celebrations of the 40^th anniversary of the Revo’ (13^th March) and International Women’s Day (8^th March) together with the launch of Phyllis Coard’s just published prison memoirs titled Unchained, were focused on the struggles and gains of the women of the Grenada Revolution.
