The GMB trade union supports the call for the Return of the Remains of Grenadian Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and others

TRADE UNION SUPPORTS UK CAMPAIGNERS CALL

THE DEMAND IS FOR THE UNITED STATES TO RELEASE THE REMAINS OF GRENADIAN PM BISHOP AND OTHERS

On the 8th of June 2023 the GMB trade union, one of the largest in the United Kingdom with over 500,000 members, passed the following Motion at its annual Congress.

The Motion was passed unopposed following Mike Tinnions speech

Grenada Return the Remains

This Congress must use all its political resources to engage with the UK and/or US governments to ensure that the remains of the Grenadian leaders slain in October 1983 and believed to be in the possession of the US Government are returned to their families.

This action by the GMB trade union is excellent news for the Campaign. It signifies, after many years of hard work, that recognition has been given to the call of the Grenadian people to return the bodies of their beloved leader and others killed alongside him.  Doing so will ensure that they have a commemorative and dignified burial in the land of their birth.

Ben Campbell-White supports the call for the return

It has been almost 40 years since the US forces took the bodies following their invasion of Grenada in 1983.  The Administration has refused to engage with anyone regarding the whereabouts of the bodies.

However, a senior US officer, in charge of the invasion, confirmed to a number of visiting Congressmen where Maurice Bishop’s body was found.  He went on to state, in a Congressional interview, how he attended a forensic examination of the body.

Mike Tinnion of the GM

Mike Tinnion, the motion’s proposer, said. “It is really great that our union is backing the families and supporters of Bishop and those killed alongside him in their fight for justice.  The US must return their remains or provide an explanation as to what happened. It is unacceptable for bodies to be withheld from the families and denied a decent burial”.

After years of work to recover their remains, we continue to be inspired by the Hillsborough families, who were rebuffed in their early quest for justice until they were eventually respectfully listened to.

We also call on other trade unions to pass the motion, or a similar proposition, at their meetings and annual congress; take action to achieve this; and affiliate with the campaign to Return the Remains.

Help us get Biden to release the remains of PM Maurice Bishop and others. It may be almost 40 years since the invading US forces seized their bodies. So, this can seem an impossible task to achieve. Join the campaign and help us succeed.

We have established that the US has the remains of Maurice and the others.  Please read the brief report at https://bit.ly/3pnh6O8.
